Just like in 2023, Abdel Sa\u00efd and Steve Guerdat went head-to-head in a thrilling jump-off in the Falsterbo Derby \u2013 on the exact same horses and on the exact same course. But this year, the result was reversed. With a lightning-fast and clear round, Abdel Sa\u00efd and Arpege du RU not only secured the win \u2013 they also improved their 2023 time by over six seconds. Sandra Auffarth defended her third place from last year, this time on a new horse.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Saturday afternoon offered one of the highlights of Falsterbo Horse Show, the iconic Falsterbo Derby. 19 combinations took on the demanding 1.50m course with 19 fences and 22 jumps, including water ditches, gates, stone walls, and even jumps out of the main arena \u2013 a true test for both horse and rider.<\/p>\n

Abdel Sa\u00efd\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Arpege du RU<\/em>\u00a0entered the ring as the tenth combination of the day and delivered the first clear round of the class, putting pressure on the rest of the field. For a while, it looked like the victory was his, until 2023\u2019s winning duo,\u00a0Steve Guerdat<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Easy Star de Talma<\/em>, entered the arena and matched the performance with another faultless ride. With those two remaining the only clear rounds, the stage was once again set for a jump-off between the same two riders, on the same horses, just as in 2023. Close behind, Germany\u2019s Sandra Auffarth secured third place with C\u2019Est A La Vie as the fastest of the four-faulters.<\/p>\n

A rematch with sky-high expectations \u2013 would Abdel\u2019s hunger for revenge pay off, or would Steve defend his title?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abdel Sa\u00efd was first to go in the jump-off and set the tone with a fast and clear round, putting serious pressure on the reigning champion. Steve Guerdat, widely considered a Derby specialist, appeared unfazed and guided his Easy Star de Talma around the course with precision and experience \u2013 also clear. But it wasn\u2019t enough to break Sa\u00efd\u2019s winning streak. With this victory, Abdel added another title to his growing list, only hours after winning the morning\u2019s Rolex Grand Prix Qualifier.<\/p>\n

As tradition dictates, the jump-off, just as the historic Derby course, was identical to the one where these two stars last battled for the podium in 2023. While a few fences may change position slightly, the riders clearly came well prepared this year: Abdel Sa\u00efd and Arpege du RU improved their time by more than six seconds. When asked how they managed that, Abdel laughed and answered:<\/p>\n

\u201cLack of control!”<\/em>\u00a0and continued:<\/p>\n

“Honestly, she\u2019s just naturally a really fast horse. Two years ago, I think I was too timid. I learned a lot from riders like Steve \u2013 in those situations, when you\u2019re first to go, just trying for a clean round isn\u2019t enough. You have to really go for it.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The new Derby champion’s appreciation for his horse was unmistakable:<\/p>\n

“She always gives everything. She tried so hard \u2013 especially at the wall. I came in on a long distance, but she just rocked it. That\u2019s why we do this \u2013 because of horses like her.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Derby jumping is a true test of courage, technique, and trust between horse and rider, something Abdel Sa\u00efd and Arpege du RU proved with every jump.<\/p>\n

“You need a horse that\u2019s both brave and smart. These fences and situations \u2013 banks, gates, jumping out of the arena, you don\u2019t see that in regular classes,”<\/em>\u00a0said Abdel after the win.<\/p>\n

Derby Specialist Praised the Falsterbo Crowd<\/strong>
\nToday\u2019s runner-up Steve Guerdat shared his thoughts during the press conference:<\/p>\n

“As always, it was a great Saturday at Falsterbo. My horse did really well \u2013 people often assume he\u2019ll go clear, but it\u2019s never that easy. Still, it\u2019s such a joy riding a class like this.”<\/em><\/p>\n

He continued:<\/p>\n

“We were lucky with the sport despite the bad weather. The Nations Cup yesterday was great, and today\u2019s derby \u2013 with a jump-off \u2013 made it even better for the crowd. The organizers did a fantastic job, and I\u2019m especially impressed by the audience. Even in the rain yesterday, every seat was filled, and people stayed for the prize-giving. Sweden deserved the win yesterday, and I\u2019m just happy I could be part of another great afternoon of sport.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Third Place \u2013 on a New Horse<\/strong>
\nJust like in 2023, Sandra Auffarth claimed third place, this time riding C\u2019Est A La Vie, competing in his first-ever derby:<\/p>\n

“This was my horse\u2019s first derby, so I was curious how he\u2019d handle it. I trained a little, but not too much. He was fantastic \u2013 I love riding Derby, it\u2019s absolutely my favorite thing. And I think my horse enjoys it too.”<\/em><\/p>\n

When asked how her background in eventing \u2013 including two World Championship gold medals \u2013 helps in a Derby like this, she answered:<\/p>\n

“You face unknown situations, and both horses and riders must react quickly \u2013 that\u2019s very similar to cross-country. The course is longer, but unlike eventing, here you have more time to prepare for each jump. For me, the mix of both is what makes it so special.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Derby Champions Honoured the Falsterbo Volunteers<\/strong>
\nToday\u2019s top three gave the crowd a thrilling display of world-class sport that won\u2019t soon be forgotten. All riders on the podium expressed their gratitude to the organisers for a fantastic event. After the press conference, the new Derby champion Abdel Sa\u00efd took a moment to record a video message to the volunteers who make Falsterbo Horse Show what it is:<\/p>\n

“I would really like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers that are here from morning til night, whatever the weather is, to make this happen for us. And to make it possible for these beautiful crowds to come and enjoy the show.
\nI would also like to take the opportunity to thank the organisers for all the efforts they do, and to make this all happen. But again, above all, the volunteers and crowds, I’d really like to thank them for all the support and dedication.”<\/em><\/p>\n
